The Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-General Suleiman Kazaure has said that the law establishing the Scheme places the responsibility of provision and maintenance of orientation camps with state governments.
He therefore, charged the states to live up to their statutory responsibility by ensuring that proper orientation camps are provided for Corps members.
He stated this in his address at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Orientation meeting held in Kaduna yesterday.
General Kazaure however, appreciates state governments that are fulfilling this responsibility by providing and upgrading orientation camps in their respective states. He specifically commended the Kaduna State Government for the routine renovation of orientation camp and extension of other form of supports to the NYSC Secretariat in the state.
Speaking on the Orientation course, the DG said it is one of the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC and is very significant as it introduces new sets of Corps members to the objectives and programmes of the Scheme.
“Being the launch-pad for the service year, the quality of management of the course therefore, goes a long way to make lasting impression on the Corps members and influences their commitment to the service of the fatherland.
“It is on this premise that Management of the NYSC brings together, top managers of the Scheme, collaborating agencies, as well as other critical stakeholders to review previous Orientation exercises with a view to mapping out strategies for the successful conduct of the forthcoming one,” he said.
The host of the event, Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai commended Management of the NYSC for recognizing the need for adequate planning and consultation which are necessary ingredients for attaining organizational goals.
“I have followed with keen interest the giant strides made in recent times by the NYSC in other areas of your mandate at different levels, despite obvious challenges.
“My administration will continue to partner with the Scheme in the state with a view to assisting it to achieve its mandate.
“In this regard, we have commenced in phases, the renovation of key structures at the orientation camp to provide conducive environment for the induction of successive batches of corps members deployed to the state. We will also do more to address other areas of need within the resources available to the state government,” he said.
