World Children’s Day: UNICEF harps on rights of the Nigerian child

Children yesterday took over the affairs of Transport Hilton hotel in Abuja, in a grand style to mark the World Children’s Day.
Our reporter observed that the children were in charge of all the sensitive positions at the hotel; from the Managing Director to the least position at the hotel.
The children were also seen attending to guests, checking people and the entrance and working at the restaurant and other departments.
Speaking on the significance of the event tagged; ‘Children take over’, organized by United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF), the organization’s Chief of Communication, Doune Porter, said the event which is the anniversary of the convention on the rights of the child is very significant in the life of every Nigerian child.
“We are having children take control of all places of work today; both private and public sector. Most of the children will also be speaking on various media platforms about the right of a child.
“We are giving them a voice because they are the leaders of tomorrow.
We are also standing with children living in poverty, disease, violence and a lot of other problems.
“In Nigeria, children are looking forward to having better education.
We need to protect them and give them the best that they need because they are the future leaders.”
Also speaking, UNICEF’s Communication Specialist, Geoffrey Njoku said the children need to know what they will be doing in the future.
“They need to advocate for their rights to draw attention to situation of children in the country. Currently, malnutrition, child mortality are some of the issues that need proper attention.”
On his part, the Country General Manager of the hotel, Etienne Gailliez, said the children are being thought how the hotel and its various departments operate.
“We are motivating them about hotel so that they will know how it works. We need to prepare and engage them towards the future. We also need to give them the best food that will enable them develop healthily”.
