Niger NBA urges Gov. Bello to obey Court judgment, conduct LG elections

The Chairman Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Niger state chapter, Mohammed Kudu Ndayeko, has called on Governor Abubakar Sani Bello to conduct local government elections following the judgment of a High Court sitting at New Bussa in favour of the council Chairmen.
Ndayeko made the call n Minna, explaining that Section 7 of the Constitution says that its only elected local government chairmen recognized by the constitution in Nigeria.
He said the judgment by the Presiding Judge, Justice Mohammed Mohammed included the local government law amended the current Chairmen were elected and that naturally by February 13, 2018 their tenure must have ended, hence the need for another elections to avoid vacancy.
NBA chairman added that the law provided was two years as at the time the current chairmen were elected into office and they seized to be chairmen on the date of judgment and 2001 law for three years if the judgment stands while they are still awaiting full judgment of the court.
He advised the state government to as a matter of urgency go ahead to conduct a fresh local government elections to up hell the constitutional existence of the local councils in Niger state.
The High Court in Borgu local government in the state had last week gave victory to the local government chairmen who took the state government to court for reducing their tenure to two years from three years.
