Three escaped death as tricycle rams into water channel In Asaba

Date:

Osakhare Erese, Asaba

Three passengers, including the tricycle rider narrowly escaped death when the tricycle they were riding rammed into the storm water drainage in front of a New Generation Bank, close to Uzor-Igwe Primary School in the heart of Asaba, the Delta State yesterday.
It was gathered that, due to the heavy traffic gridlock as a result of the ongoing construction of Storm Water Channel that runs through the Nnebisi road, the tricycle was trying to maneuver its way out of the area when it collided with another tricycle, and because it was very close to the drainage, fell into it within a twinkle of an eye.
The victims were very lucky as they only sustained minor injuries before they were rescued, using one of the folk-lifts of the construction company.
Some witnesses, who spoke on the matter, said “leaving the deep channel that is very close to the road open without barricaded is dangerous as cars can miss their way into it”.
They appealed to the government and the contractor handling the project to take pre-cautionary measures so that other vehicles would not fall into it.
As at the time of filing in this report when the incident took place, the tricycle was still inside the channel.
But parents have called on the contractor handling the Storm Water Control Channel that runs through Uzoigwe Primary School, Asaba, to install barricaded and warning signals to prevent school pupils from falling into the open drainage now under construction.
Some of the parents made the call while speaking to our reporter at the project site on the Nnebisi road, Asaba.
According to Mrs. Helen Chukwukere, with two children schooling at the school, “we were told that a tricycle, including its passengers fell into it”, so, exposing the children to the deep drainage is not good.
The contractor handling the project should take precautionary safety measures so that the children would not fall inside. Just look at the ongoing work, look at the children, particularly when they are on break; you know who children are.
