Cancer Day: NAWOJ, NGOs take awareness campaign to grassroots

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), in collaboration with Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Link for Help Foundation and Empowerment Support Initiative organised campaign against cancer as part of activities mark Cancer Day.
The programme which was tagged “We can, I can”, aimed at creating awareness on the deadly cancer scourge During the occasion, the wife to the Minister of Transportation, Mrs. Judith Amaechi said, “my first day in office as the first lady, I was visited by a women with cancer of the breast and already it was swollen, and it was discovered later so there was not much to be done”.
Judith added that the solution to cancer has not been found and it is something that needs much effort believing that there is a need for collaboration to get some level of preventive treatment towards stopping the disease.
Earlier, President of Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Dr. Jumai Ahmahu stated that cancer has no respect for age, colour, class in society, stressing that everybody is affected in one way or the other.
According to her, “cancer knows no age and in one way we have all been affected by it directly or indirectly, I also, lost an uncle to cancer recently”.
Ahmadu identified alcohol and tobacco as major causes of cancers while breast cancers are hereditary saying; “so changing our lifestyle and regular visits to the hospitals will help to stop the spread of the disease.”
The Associate Director Health, Links for Health Foundation, Dr. Naji Ebuta gave a brief lecture on the causes of cancer and possible way to stop it.
He revealed that liver and breast cancer remains the highest killer,
adding that over 10,000 Nigerians die of cancer annually because most patients present their case at a late stage.
