A serious pandemonium broke yesterday, following a fracas between security personnel and officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abuja, the nation’s capital city.
It was gathered that the FRSC officers engaged in a fisticuffs with Soldiers and police personnel soldiers attached to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), for attempting to enforce a court order in the Corps premises in Wuse Zone 7.
In particular, trouble started early Wednesday, when the security agencies insisted on carrying out the court notice on the Road Safety, for alleged environmental contravention.
Consequently, the fracas caused serious traffic gridlock around the area, as the situation swiftly attracted mob to the place.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that during the fracas, a soldier was allegedly injured while a staff of the AEPB was “taken hostage” by the Road Safety officers.
Also, soldiers and policemen who were part of the AEPB team took custody of an FRSC officer.
Confirming the fracas via telephone, AEPB’s spokesman, Muktar Ibrahim, described it as unfortunate incident, saying FRSC has apologized for the wrong steps they took.
He said: “Just to clear the air, AEPB staff were there just to carry out a court order over environmental contravention by the FRSC.
“But I think that they were not happy that as government organization that they should be made to comply with any environmental issue.
“As I speak with you now, they have apologized, and promised to do the right thing.”
On whether any AEPB staff was taken hostage by the FRSC, the Agency spokesman affirms” yes, you know in this kind of situation, they did that.
“But they have released the person after the situation was calmed down.”
