Police urged to use whistle blowers in curbing illegal arms proliferation

The Nigerian Police Force,NPF has been advised to introduce the whistle blowing policy in its national operation to curb proliferation of small, light and illegal weapons .
Former Speaker of the Adamawa state Assembly,Honorable Hassan Turaki gave the advice at a one-day sensitization workshop for stakeholders on the best panacea to curb proliferation of illegal weapons in our societies held by the Adamawa state Police Command in Yola yesterday.
He stressed that people would cooperate if there is benefit attached.
Turaki opined that the policy if put in place will be accepted by Nigerians where many will be exposed for hiding their prohibited weapons which are used in committing crimes in the societies.
Earlier in his keynote address, Commissioner of Police in charge of the state, Abdullahi Ibrahim Yerima said the workshop with the stakeholders was informed by the directives of the Inspector General of Police in states so that commencement of disarmament and recovery of prohibited fire arms or weapons from wrong hands in the societies.
Yerima said most of these communal clashes, herdsmen/farmers crises and other civil disturbances resulting to killings and destruction of properties are taking place because of the weapons in circulation with in our populace which are majorly without permission or authority to do so.
Yerima announced that anybody in possession of all prohibited firearms must surrender them within fourteen days(14) or face the wrath of law if caught.
“Any one found with prohibited firearms after the expiration of the 14days will be arrested, investigated and prosecuted.
“The Police will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law on any individual or group under any guise whose conduct run contrary to the law of the land,” the commissioner warned.
Most of the stakeholders that attended the workshop and spoke welcomed the development pledging to disseminate the information to their people across the state for total compliance.
