The Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Damaturu, Yobe state capital, presided over by G.Jumbom Hussaini, has sentenced a 31 years old woman, Elizabeth David for causing grievous hurt which contradicts section 245 of the penal code law.
Police prosecutor, Sgt. Moses Tinjimin, told the court that the accused person intentionally poured hot water on a woman, one Viana Okafor, of New Jerusalem ward, Damaturu, knowing fully that it would cause bodily harm on her, and as a result, she sustained grievous hurt from the hot water.
He told the court further that the accused person also picked up stone and hit the victim on her head after pouring her the hot water, stating that the offence contradicts section 248 of the penal code law.
She was convicted of the charge against her and sentenced to serve one year imprisonment without an option of fine and to pay a fine of N2000 to the victim.
Our reporter recalled that earlier, the now convicted person has filed a case against the complainant, Viana Okafor before chief magistrate Asiya Abubakar in the Damaturu senior magistrate court 1 where Viana Okafor, was consequently arraigned on four count charges of criminal trespass, intentional insult, deformation of character and causing hurt.
However, on the fateful day, the court could not hold because the accused person’s counsel did not appear in court leading to the adjournment of the case for another date.
Sources closed to the court told our reporter that Elizabeth David was angry because the case has lingered in court on the reason of the accused person’s defense counsel not appearing in court for about two court sittings.
Unfortunately, as the complainant and the accused person left the court room and were outside, the complainant, Elizabeth David opened a flask with hot water and poured it out on the body of the accused person, Viani Okafor, and was consequently arrested and the victim rushed to hospital where she is presently receiving medical attention.
The source told our reporter that from all indication, she came prepared with her ill intension as there was no baby with her to suggest that the water in the flask she used was meant for preparing food for the baby.
