Nigerian Bar Association, NBA has lamented over the large scale destruction orchestrated by the Nigerian Army in Naka, Gwer West local government area of Benue State, where over 300 houses were razed and one person reportedly killed last week.
Chairman Makurdi Branch of the NBA Emmanuel Agbakor who made the lamentation yesterday during an interview with newsmen at the 2018 Law Week organized by the branch, said a team of lawyers have been sent to the area to carry out assessment of the level of destruction with a view to pursue legal action against the military.
Agbakor also, frowned at the manner the Federal Government is handling killings of innocent and helpless Benue Indigenes by suspected herdsmen, intimating that the body has taken government and the nation security chiefs to the international court for their unholy silence.
He said what is happening in Benue is genocide, crime against humanity which is an international crime among many others being perpetrated across the state and in the country, saying this crime has a way of impacting on the world.
He maintained that the 2018 law week seeks to address these issues by looking at the possibility of administering it through Nigerian criminal justice.
Also speaking, Paul Usoro, SAN, who presented a paper at the occasion, explained that the essence of the law week is beneficial to young lawyers, mentorship on topical issues and in the administration of justice in Nigeria.
The week has as its theme, ‘Incorporating International Crimes into the Corpus of Criminal Justice in Nigeria: Prospects and challenges”.
