AWC qualifier: Falcons depart for the Gambia today

African Women Championship defending champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria will leave the country today for the Gambia ahead of the AWC qualifier with the Scorpion of the Gambia.
In an exclusive interview, Falcons coach, Thomas Dennerby disclosed that the technical team of the African champions have put everything in order to select the best team that would be able to prosecute the double qualifiers.
Dennerby further expressed confidence in the ability of the players who have been in camp in Abuja for three months adding that the addition of 13 foreign-based players will help to consolidate the team with the hoke-based players.
“First of all, I am happy that we can invite players from abroad because we have good players in Europe, United States and China too and the world over. I think their coming in will help us to have a good mix with the players from the domestic league.
“We have been in camp for three weeks, we have to pick the best 22 players we think that can give Nigeria success in the two games against the Gambia.
“The past week has been very interesting in the camp because the players were really fighting to take the shirt and be in the squad. It is nice we have good training where everybody is fighting hard and I am really impressed with their attitude and work rate in the training. Hopefully, we picked a good squad that will go to the Gambia and play the return leg at home on Monday.
“For now, I am very comfortable because I can see in the trainings that we have good players and I am hopeful we will qualify for the African Women Championship
“We will leave Nigeria on June 4th and arrive the Gambia same day. We will have our practice on the 5th and play the match on the 6th. Then we will come back to Nigeria the following day to play the return leg on the 11th,” the coach said.
