The first lady of Gombe state, Hajiya Adama Dankwambo has empowered a total of 3,626 women in the state under her pet project, HAWEP, with a view to reducing their poverty, to enable them benefit from the dividends of democracy.
The coordinator of the programme, Alhaji Hassan Adamu, who is also Special Assistant to the first lady, gave the hint in a press release made available to news men in Gombe.
He said the gesture was aimed at providing welfare services to the physically challenged and empowering poor families to help them access wealth and create resources that will better their lives.
According to him, the programme trained women in skills acquisition which ran for eight (8) consecutive weeks. All trainees passed through a rigorous screening exercise in order to determine their fitness forthe programme, he disclosed.
“A weekly transport allowance of N1, 000 was given to each trainee in order to reduce the effect of high transformation fare. During the programme all trainees had 70% attendance; in addition, trainees had to pass examinations at the end of the programme”. He stated.
Alhaji Hassan Adamu also revealed that, the methodology used in selecting beneficiaries considered the less privileged women, widows, disabled, sickle cell patients, VVF patients while HIV/AIDS patients were selected from all the wards of 11 LGAs of the state based on stratified sampling technique.
At the end of training, successful trainees were given the sum of N50, 000 as startup capital in addition to working tools and certificates based on their area of specialization.
