Women leader appeals to Council to rescind relocation of central market

Date:

The president of Bwari Central Market Women Association, Mrs Helen Isaac, has appealed to the Chairman of the Bwari Area Council, Mr. Peter Yohanna, to rescind the decision to relocate the town’s central market

Isaac told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bwari that commercial activities would continue to thrive in Bwari Area Council provided that the relocation of the existing market was backed by the right policies.

According to her, “the relocation of the central market is not necessary and the council should shelve the move.

“In this Bwari market; there are no clear cut positions and linking roads to encourage people residing in the area to carry out adequate buying and selling of products.

“There is need for the area council to rearrange the market to meet the yearnings of Bwari residents.

“Proper arrangement of the market to reflect gender balance will help to encourage our obligation of paying market taxes when due and also increase the revenue base of the council.

“Doing that will be a lot better than relocating us to places we don’t even know about. The authority should leave us here and arrange the market for us.

”We appeal to the authority to leave us at this permanent place; it is not proper to reposition one market, separate it into different parts and different locations, within a particular community.

“If the authority really wants to reposition the market by relocating it to another place, it must do that to ensure that the new place can accommodate everybody.”

She, however, said promotion of commerce through relocation of markets required proper planning. (NAN)
