Zamfara state establishes 38 malnutrition centres

Zamfara state government in collaboration with developmental partners has established 38 Community Management of Acute Malnutrition, being part of measures to put the rate of high malnutrition among children of the state under control.

Commissioner for health, Alhaji Kabiru Ahmad Janyau, announced the development yesterday, at the inauguration ceremony of Bakura local council committee for food and nutrition held at Bakura.

Janyau, who was represented by the Director, Primary Health Care of the ministry, Alhaji Yusuf Musa said the state government had in 2013 established a budget line for nutrition in order to ensure government’s commitment towards the support for partners in alleviating malnutrition across the state.

He applauded the effort of ‘Save the Children and UNICEF for their technical and financial commitment towards treating children affected by malnutrition in different parts of the state, pointing out that, over 42,000 malnourished children were treated within last five years of development nutrition projects in the state run by Save the children and UNICEF.

In his speech, Bakura local government council Chairman, Alhaji Bello Dankande Gamji said the 14 council Chairmen have contributed about N1.5million on monthly basis for nutrition activities through the state basket funds.

Peoples Daily observed that, according to 2008 Demographic Health Survey, Zamfara State was among the states in northern Nigeria with an alarming rate of malnutrition, as about half of children under five were stunted and 11% were wasted.
