Stakeholders in the education sector has expressed concern over the number of qualified Teachers in the country.
While stating that this is one of the major challenge facing the Education sector in the country.
The Country Director, Action Aid Nigeria, Mrs Ene Obi urged the Federal government to revamp the National Teacher Training College.
She made the disclosure at a National dialogue to commemorate the World Teachers day in Abuja.
She disclosed that the scrapping of the Teachers college has led to brain drain in the teaching sector.
“We need to have Professional Teachers in the Education sector.
Not just those who dabbled into the art. We need to have Tutors who are properly trained in the ethics of the job”
In the same vein, she charged Nigerians to embrace building human capital development through Education.
“Poverty can be reduced through education. The girl child education should not be neglected. When you educate a girl child, you are capturing a large number of people”
The Executive Director, Staff Training, NUT, Dr Clinton Ibitibo noted that the problem of Teaching stems from the fact that personnel who practice the profession resort to it as the last option.
“Most youth do not like studying Education courses. In some instances they claim the remuneration is poor”
According to him, the Education sector will grow tremendously when the welfare of the teachers is being considered as a great priority.
“We should learn from Countries Such as Singapore and Finland who do not joke with the Teachers welfare. The leaders need to change the way things are being done, in order to get maximum result”
In addition, he urged all Nigerians to work together in reducing the number of Out of school children in Nigeria.
“With the recent data being obtained, there is need to ensure that all Nigerian children have access to education”
The NORAD Project Coordinator, Mr Laban Onisimus spoke on the need to utilize tax in funding the Education sector.
“Nigeria has the lowest tax to GDP ratio. The fund that is obtained from different states can be used to fund education”
“Most citizens do not like paying tax because there is no proper accountability in the system”
