A man suspected to be a gun runner for agents from Mali met his waterloo as he was
arrested by the police in Yauri local government area of Kebbi State.
The arms he was allegedly carrying were concealed in smoked fish carton imported rom Mali through Kamba border area.
An Eyewitnesses told in Peoples Daily that the suspect Abubakar Baba , a Mali national born in Nigeria, has been operating under the cover of an international smoked fish dealer from Mali.
According to the eye witness, “Our consignment usually arrive on Tuesday night from Mali via Niger republic. He (the suspect) usually receives between eight and 10 cartoons of the consignment but will always insist that a selected two should not be opened to buyers. The two cartoons are always personally carried away by him.
We gathered that one of those special cartons fell off at Gwiwa (a Niger boarder community near Kamba). It was picked up by some good Samaritans who reported the matter and handed over the carton to the Nigerien police.
“Upon hearing that the carton is in possession of the police, the suspected gun runner, Baba who was already in Kamba, made a U-turn, hired a vehicle absconded in a vehicle he chartered at the cost of N25,000 and went into hiding in Yauri.
“The police in Yauri were alerted and Baba was immediately arrested, And brought to the police headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.
“The police are right now searching our shops and some of us were made to write statements”, some of the fish dealers who spoke on condition of anonymity told out reporter.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mohammed Mainagge, could not be reached and did not reply text messages sent to his number.
