A group called Northern Youth Assembly yesterday vowed to tackle the prevalent of substance abuse among youth in northern Nigeria. President of the group, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, stated this at thepre-grand luncheon/orientation lectures for stakeholders on anti-drug abuse campaign in Kano.
Waiya, said the campaign was imperative because reports have shown that Kano state has the highest cases of substance abuse among youth.
“It is imperative to embark on this mass campaign considering the prevalence of substance abuse among youth in northern Nigeria.
“Reports by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have shown that Kano is the highest state in substance abuse among the youth for the period of 2010-2012. This is really sad and must be stopped by our association”, he said The president lamented that among the youths that engaged in substance abuse, females, especially married women, have taken the higher ratio of substance abuse compared to their male counterparts in the region.
In his remark, Kano state Director of the NDLEA, Mallam Umar Adamu, who was represented by Mallam Mannir Mustapha, said “NDLEA last year arrested 567 persons engaged in substance abuse. We also arrested 255.357 Kilogram of substances as well as prosecuted 267 among the arrested persons”, he said.
