Kano: Police, NBA reach truce over molestation of lawyers

Date:

From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

The Kano state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Wakili has apologized to members of the Bar.
The State NBA had in a statement last Wednesday accused policemen of molesting and subsequently arresting its members who were working at an election petition secretariat.
The association also accused Wakili of being partisan in the discharge of his duty.
The NBA consequently threatened to issue an ultimatum to the police on the matter, however, on receiving the information about the ultimatum, the commissioner personally appeared at the NBA secretariat to tender the unreserved apology.
Speaking to newsmen after the visit, Wakili said he decided to come by himself to say sorry after he investigated the incident that led to the arrest and detention of two lawyers.
“After receiving the complaint and even heard it through media, i launched an investigation and found that they were unlawfully arrested.
“Therefore, i deemed it fit to go there myself and tender my apology. I am a Police who discharges his duty within the concept of law,” he said
The CP also urged the association and other people to challenge him where ever he goes contrary to law.
In his remarks, the state secretary of the association, Mujtaba Adamu-Ameen, commended the CP for the gesture, describing him as professional and ethical Corp.
“As you can see, the CP abided by our ultimatum. He came here and apologised. This show that he is a professional and disciplined Corp,” he said
