A teacher, Adams Taititi, is standing trial before a Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ court, Abuja, for allegedly giving false information, with intent to mislead a public servant.
Taititi, 58, resides at No. 59, Alapo Street, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun.
The Prosecutor, ASP. Chris Ojeh, told the court that the accused, through a petition to the Inspector-General of Police dated Feb. 28, gave false information about five policemen.
He said that the accused alleged that five policemen, Corporals Femi Odusina, Adewole Adedeji, Wasiu Taiwo, Ogunseeni Odunayo and PC. Victor Adenuga, all of Ogun State Police Command, were members off a cult.
Ojeh, however, said police investigation uncovered that the accused lied against the policemen.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 140 (A and B) of the Penal code; a charge which the accused pleaded not guilty to.
In his defence, Taititi said: “I wrote a petition against the five policemen because of the way they brutalised people and I wanted them to be cautioned.’’’
The Magistrate, Mrs. Nwacheonwu Chinyere, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with a surety in like sum.
Chinyere ordered that the surety must have a means of livelihood and a fixed address which must be verified by the prosecutor, adding that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
She adjourned the case to April 7 for further hearing.
