Following the mass retirement of teachers in public schools in Delta State, the Nigerian Union of Teachers ( NUT) has called for the employment of more teachers to fill the vacuum of the retired ones.
NUT also petitioned Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over the alleged neglect of the teachers’ welfare in the state, saying that teachers are the bedrock of every successful political administration and appealed to him to give priority attention to the recruitment of teachers to fill in the vacuum in the school system and in tandem with the SMART Agenda of his administration.
NUT in a communiqué issued and signed by Chief Puis Apojufe at the end of emergency state delegates conference held at the Teachers’ Hall, Asaba at the weekend, the union however congratulated the state Governor Dr Ifeanyi Okowa on his recent birthday celebration and commended his efforts in building a stronger Delta State.
The conference with the theme: Sustaining the DSTSSIS and reinforcement the Cohesive NUT” the union also commended the Governor for appointing Chief Patrick Ukah as Commissioner For Basic and Secondary Education and urged the state government to put the interest of teachers at heart.
The communiqué further disclosed that the NUT planned to weed out teachers without the professional certificates, adding” steps have been taken to weed out teachers without professional certificates and ensure that all employed teachers are qualified with professional certificates”
On kidnapping of teachers, the NUT urged security agents to brace up to the challenges and ensure the protection of teachers during school hours or after school hours.
