Oshimili South Local Government Council, Asaba Delta State has banned indiscriminate burial Ceremonies and warned against violation of the Council’s rules.
The Council’s Chairman, Uche Osadebe who made this known to journalists on Wednesday in Asaba, disclosed that eight violators of the sanitation laws were arrested on Tuesday by officials of the Council taskforce on sanitation, adding that the offenders were adequately punished and warned to desist from such indiscriminate dumps of refuse.
He said “in a bid to make Asaba very Clean, we have arrested and punished adequately eight Offenders with warnings to desist from indiscriminate refuse dumps in Asaba and its environs”
But investigation revealed that indiscriminate refuse dumps are worse hit in Nnebisi road, Anwai road, Summit express way, Ogbeogonogo market environment, among others,a situation that had in the past few days attracted appeals to the Council taskforce officials to enforce arrest of violators and offenders of the laws.
Osadebe said that the Council had procuerd lands for development of burial ground including Public cemetery, noting that the efforts of the Council in tackling the issue of waste management in the state capital was at the advanced stage.
He said some illegal dump sites have been evacuated by his administration in the recent times and warned that with the passing of the new environmental law by the legislative arm, the law will take its course even as he informed that the services of experts in waste management were employed.
“We know it’s part of the duties of a local government to build a cemetery and what we have done in Oshimili South is that we have been able to procure a land for that purpose, and I also went to Victoria garden City ( VGC) to get the model used there and also consulted experts, and immediately after the Celebration will Commence there so that we will have a Cemetery in Oshimili South” he said
Osadebe revealed that traditional rulers and other critical stakeholders will be consulted in enacting the law and sensitizing the people, even as he expressed confidence of leaving a lasting legacy before leaving office as Chairman of the local Government
