Relief has come for air travellers in Nigeria especially during adverse weather conditions like harmattan that usually warrant flights cancellations with the delivery of consignments of equipment for category 3 Instrument Landing Systems/Distance Measuring Equipment (ILS/DME) for a pilot phase for Lagos and Abuja airports.
The equipment, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) said were cleared over the weekend from Apapa wharf and have arrived already the agency’s premises at the domestic wing of the Lagos airport.
Managing Director of NAMA, Capt. Fola Akinkuotu said, the new equipment are part of the agency’s effort to ensure that aircraft land in adverse weather condition especially during the harmattan.
He noted that the landing aids installation will commence soon.
He also revealed that the second phase of the project involving the installation of ILS/DME in Kano, Port Harcourt and Katsina airports will commence as soon as Lagos and Abuja installations are complete.
The NAMA helmsman stressed that the choice of these airports was informed by the severe weather conditions prevalent in them.
