10 students killed, 4 injured in Katsina auto crash

Auto_CrashNo fewer than 10 students were yesterday killed and four others injured in a ghastly accident on Sheme-Kankara Road in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accident occurred when a truck conveying the students to Government Day Secondary School in Kankara town collided with an oncoming truck.

The Malumfashi Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Tijjani Muhammad, who confirmed the incident, said the accident occurred in the morning when the students were going to school, adding that the truck was also carrying timber.

According to him, the truck is coming from Sheme and going to Kankara while the other vehicle was from Kankara going to Sheme junction.

He said the rescued victims and the dead were taken to Kankara General Hospital.

An eyewitness, Malam Umar Tanko, told NAN that victims were residents of different villages studying at Kankara and boarded vehicles daily on the road.

Tanko said the students were sitting on top of the timber when the accident occurred, adding that logs of timber fell on them.

Also, the Kankara General Hospital register indicated that the survivors and the dead had been evacuated by their respective families.

NAN also gathered that Government Day Secondary School, Kankara, had been closed to mourn the dead students. (NAN)
