Bauchi denies owing pensioners N6bn backlogs

From Ahmed Kaigama, Bauchi

Bauchi State Government has denied owing over N6 billion backlogs of gratuities and pension of pensioners in the state.

It would be recalled that the chairman, Bauchi Pensioners, Alhaji Habu Gar and chairman, Bauchi Local Government Pension Association, Alhaji Yahaya Umar recently appealed to the state government to pay six billion naira owed pensioners in the state.

However, the chairman, state and local governments Pension Board, Alhaji Danladi Abubakar has denied the allegation, while reacting to the claim by both chairmen.

Abubakar said, “The backlog of pension not settled by the government is not up to 6Bn as claimed by the pensioners association, saying the bulk of the money will come from the federal government because the federal government contributes five percent, the state contributes 2.5 percent and the local government contributes 15 percent.

“We have challenges of paying them because of dwindling resources, economic meltdown, and because pensions and gratuities increase every month.
