Minimum wage: Katsina govt, labour begin negotiation

Date:

From Lawal Sa’idu Funtua, Katsina

Katsina State government and organized labour in the state have commenced negotiations on the new N30,000 minimum wage.
Speaking at the formal commencement of the negotiations, the chairman of the negotiating team and Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa appealed with the labour to show understanding and patients during the negotiation.
He however, cautioned that labour should consider issues such as the amount accrued to the state monthly from the Federation Account and the Internal Generated Revenue, IGR.
The chairman further said the negotiating team should understand that government is not all about payment of salaries, adding that there are other societal development needs seeking for government attention.
He simply raised alarm on the dwindling revenue accrued to the state from the federation accounts.
On local governments, India raised concern that a lot of them cannot pay the monthly salaries without the support from the joint account.
“ on this issue we have to look at the possibility of sustaining it.
Because here in katsina we are currently paying a rate higher than those who implemented the new minimum wage “ he added.
Responding, the chairman of the state Labour Union, Comrade Hussaini Hamisu requested for transparency and honesty on the path of the negotiating team.
