Amid growing public concern about the shrinking the space for activism, Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDCSO’s) has told the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki that the group will not be intimidated.
The Coordinator General of EDOCSO, Leftist Omobude Agho disclosed this when he attended the first General Assembly of the group at its State secretariat in Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
The governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Taiwo Akerele, said the parley became necessary to correct misconception about the policies and programmes of the government.
Recall that the organization recently launched a vile press criticisms on mainstream and social media against the State Governor for turning a side cheek, following political thugs attacked unarmed protesters and journalists in Benin City for demanding explanation about the recently privatised remodelled Central hospital complex which was built in 1906 and other issues of concern.
In a remark, Omobude Agho, decried the poor level of partnership between Edo State Government and the Civil society in the advancement of the society which he said remains apolitical.
The Chief of Staff to the Edo State Governor, Taiwo Akerele, has assured that the Godwin Obaseki-led government will continue to partner with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the State for the advancement of democracy and to be able to reach out to the yearning of Edo people.
Akerele, condemned the attacks on members of EDOCSO when they protested over the alleged privatisation of the hospital.
He explained that the Specialist Hospital is solely owned by the state government, but managed by a third party and suggested that the conversation should be built around sustainability and affordability to the masses.
He assured of a Town Hall meeting, where all stakeholders will be brought to speak on the activities of government for feedback opportunities, which the government could adopt to improve its policies.
