The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup competition slated to hold in China as well as weather have forced the Confederation of Africa Football, CAF to revert to January-February hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON holding in Cameroon next year.
The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Cameroon will hold between January and February next year
The Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) revealed that the tournament will be played from January 9 to February 6, 2021, on their request due to concerns about the weather.
The tournament was for the first time held during the summer in 2019, (June –July) moving away from the traditional January and February.
According to multiple reports, an announcement is expected to confirm the same, with the 2021 edition, set to be held in Cameroon, to be played in January.
This will immensely affect some European clubs since most of the top leagues are in action during the period.
The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup will be held in China from 17 June – 4 July 2021 thereby disrupting the 21 June – 19 July AFCON hosting date.
The 2019 32nd edition of the AFCON was held, for the first time, between 21 June – 19 July and CAF was expected to stick to this calendar going forward.
The tournament was moved to a June-July slot for last year’s first 24-team edition in Egypt, in large part to avoid clashing with the European club season.
Fecafoot also noted that the timing of June-July is rainy period in the country noting that the tournament could be disrupted by rain
