UNIBEN denies deaths from stampede

Authorities of University of Benin have denied record of deaths in the stampede which occurred at Ugbowo Campus at the early hours of Tuesday.

Head of Public Relations unit of UNIBEN, Harrison Osarenren said the eligibility forms given to all fresh students on Tuesday scheduled to be returned the following day resulted in the pushing and shoving, but he admitted that some students got injured, causing panic around Akin Dekkor main Auditorium the ivory tower.

He said security personnel were said to have forcefully closed the gate against them, leaving the surging students to fall, and hundreds of them marching on those on the ground.

The ex-governor lauded Wamakko for transforming Sokoto to what it is today. Sylva had visited the 30 megawatts State Independent Power Project in Arkilla, the new Sokoto State University, the 20 million gallons per day Asare water project, the 500 unit Kalambaina Housing scheme , the NYSC permanent orientation camp and the 600 bed Murtala Mohammed Hospital, which was started in 1991.

Ex-Governor Sylva was in Sokoto on a three day visit to see things for himself the very positive information he had received.

Speaking while departing Sokoto airport, Sylva advised the Federal Government and other governors to emulate Wamakko’s drive and commitment as well as his administration’s accommodation of all Nigerians, by making Sokoto a true home for all and sundry.

Chief Timipre Sylva has since left Sokoto.
