We may never use 70 percent, says Dr. Nuhu

Date:

Dr Shem Zagbaiyi Nuhu, represents the North Central and believes proceedings so far at the conference portend general agreement of the need for unity of purpose and that 70 percent consensus may never be used after all to decide issues.

What is your comment on the debate of the speech of Mr. President so far?

So far so good! Everybody is expressing his own mind and trying to dish out whatever his greatest concerns are and the speed at which we are moving and also the freedom with which people expressed themselves is commendable. I believe by the time the 492 persons expressed their opinions on the presidential speech the tone and the likely outcome of the conference will be visible.

But it seems people are tribalistic rather than nationalistic in their presentations?

Can you afford that? Because if they are seen not to speak the minds of their people they are likely to draw the wrath of the back home, probably that’s why.

Were you satisfied with the 70 percent consensus decision?

Oh yes, and we may not even get to use it because it may just be there as a standby provision in the event that we don’t come to consensus. But the very fact that we came to consensus of 70 percent suggests that every matter that comes up in this conference we have people that will sit down and resolve it amicably.
