NGO harps on amenities accessible to physically-challenged persons

Date:

A nongovernmental organisation (NGO), Steps to the Top Leadership Centre (STLC), has appealed to the government at all levels to provide standard public infrastructure, that is accessible to people with disabilities.
Making this point, the Founder of the Organisation, Dr. Theresa Nwachukwu, noted that there are universal standards of how high building , toilets should be for a person on a wheelchair.
Nwachukwu spoke during the second phase of ‘’Program Thinkable 2”, a training programme aim at changing the mindset of women living with disabilities.
She explained that the training programme, which was sponsored by the VOICE Nigeria, in conjunction with Oxfam International was aimed at shaping the minds of women with disabilities and make them useful to themselves, their families and the society at large, so that they can contribute their quarter to the developments of the country.
According to her, “there are universal standards of how high buildings, toilets should be for a person on a wheelchair to move between them. Those standards should start being maintained.
“There is a standard of where the doorknob should be. It is difficult for people with disabilities to get around. Everything should just be made accessible to people with disabilities.”
One of the trainees, Maureen Chioma Egede, while thanking the organisation for the training, explained that the programme has changed her mind set, even as she called on governments, spirited Nigerians and other development partners to embark on such ventures to give hope to people with special needs.
