Date:

A Group under the auspices of Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP), has organized stakeholders meeting to brainstorm on the implementation of the right to basic education in Kaduna state in order to chart a way forward.
The stakeholders drawn from civil society organizations, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board, UNICEF, and the media gathered to discuss strategies for implementation of the Universal Basic Education, (UBE) Act in the State.
The stakeholders said even though the Act declared free and compulsory education for all, but lamented that education is not free.
Speaking during the meeting, the State Coordinator of LEDAP, Michael Aboh, said the meeting was to enlightened stakeholders on the implementation of UBE Act and promotion of rights of children to schools in the state.
He said children have the right to free and compulsory education as declared and adopted in 2005 UBE Act.
According to him, these rights defined children’s rights to protection, education, health care, shelter, and good nutrition; pointing out that these rights should be realistic and actualized in the schools.
“Our major concern now is on education, as we want you as stakeholders to promote these rights in schools.”
