The Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Dr. Sam Amadi has pegged the current electricity generation in the country at 3600 megawatts.
Amadi who made the disclosure while answering questions from journalists at a Radio programme ‘Political Platform’ anticipated further increase in the power generation after the current repairs on
the vandalised lines are fully restored.
The NERC’s Chairman said more magewatts are being expected from the NIPPs therefore advised Nigerians to be patient with government and the new owners of electricity, expressing confidence that the situation would be much better by the end of the year.
He attributed one of the current challenges of electricity in the country to gas constraint but however disclosed that the federal government was doing everything possible to address the situation.
Dr. Amadi said some plants had been completed but had not been put to use because of gas, assuring a speedy resolution through the gas agreement.
He expressed concerned over the activities of saboteurs and vandals of electricity infrastructure, saying that the act was capable of frustrating government’s efforts in ensuring stable power supply in
the country.
Amadi therefore advised well-meaning Nigerians to guard government’s facilities against vandalism since it would lead to retrogression in the efforts so far made in the power sector.
On metering, he said consumers would be encouraged to pay the fixed price so as to make the market attractive for investors, believing they would be able to recoup their money once investment is made.
