Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, Registrar, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), has said that the media is critical to a sound educational system.

Ajiboye made this known at a one-day training workshop for the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN) in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

He said that the media; particularly education reporters had been instrumental to the developmental changes in the sector.

He lauded the journalists over the reportage about the activities of agencies in the sector.

Ajiboye urged them not to relent in their efforts to help to change the narrative in the sector, specifically regarding teachers.

He noted that TRCN in collaboration with ECAN and other relevant agencies had been able to ensure that only qualified and registered teachers were offered teaching appointments.

He added that the collaboration had helped to improve teachers’ proficiency through continuous literacy training, computer-based tests for qualifying examination among others.

“TRCN is appreciative of the support it has enjoyed from ECAN since it came on board.

“Before I assumed office, not so much was heard about TRCN in spite of the huge work it was doing.

“The case is, however, different today because your reportage has created more awareness on our activities,” he said.

He gave the assurance that the agency would continue to engage the media to help produce teachers that could compete globally.
