Ethiopia battling relentless pressure

Ethiopia’s government has been busy trying to fend off relentless criticism over the Tigray conflict.

The foreign ministry considers the US sanctions unwarranted because it says some steps have been taken to address the abuses.

The attorney general recently said more than 50 soldiers were facing charges of killing civilians or committing acts of sexual violence, including rape.

He said trials were under way and there had so far been three convictions for rape and one for killing a civilian.

But there are also many reports of atrocities by Eritrean soldiers.

It’s now more than eight weeks since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the Eritrean president had agreed to withdraw his troops.

They haven’t left and it seems Mr Abiy needs them in this war. As long as they stay the criticism will keep coming.
