Zamfara: Lawmakers deny plan to impeach Deputy Gov, Mahdi

Date:

From Ibrahim Sidi Muh’d, Gusau

The Zamfara State House of Assembly has denied holding any proceeding with a view to impeach the State Deputy Governor, Barrister Mahdi Aliyu, for his refusal to follow the Governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle to decamp to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Assembly explained that the denial followed reading of the letter duly signed by the Deputy Governor at the hallow chamber of the Assembly by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya.
This was contained in a statement by the Director General Press Affairs of the Zamfara House of Assembly, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura.
The statement reads that, “In the said letter, the Deputy Governor drew the attention of the Speaker and by extension the entire House of Assembly of an impending Court action instituted by himself and his office to restrain the House from any impeachment process against him.
“When the letter was finally read, Speaker Magarya directed for the House debate over it and Hon. Yusuf Alhassan Kanoma representing Maru North has faulted the content of the letter and the Court order itself, pointing out that at no time did the House ever discussed or deliberated on the move to impeach the Deputy Governor”.
According to the statement, honourable Kanoma described the letter sent to the House by the Deputy Governor and Court Order as out of contest.
However, it added that the Speaker and entire honorable members were called upon to direct the legal department of the House to critically analyse both the letter and the said Court Order and advise the House appropriately.
