An Upper Area Court in Zuba, in the Federal Capital territory (FCT) has sentenced two applicants to eight months in prison for stealing a woman’s purse from a pharmacy.
The convicts are Auwalu Sa’idu, of Mabushi-Abuja and Sani Ibrahim of Dakwa, Abuja.
The Presiding Judge, Malam Aminu Sa’ad, sentenced them last Wednesday, after they pleaded guilty to the three counts of joint act, trespass and theft.
Sa’ad however gave the convicts an option to a fine of N35, 000 each.
He ordered that if the convicts failed to pay the fine, they would spend eight months and additional 21 days in prison.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr. Haruna Danlami, had told the court that on April 14, Mrs. Kehinde Folunso, of Dakwa, Abuja lodged a report against the convicts at the Zuba police station.
Danlami said that the convicts went into a pharmacy pretending to buy some drugs.
He said as the complainant turned to find out if she had the drugs, they stole her black purse containing N4, 000, a cell phone and some recharge cards for sale.
The prosecutor said during police investigation, all the stolen items were found in their possession.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 79, 288 and 348 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
