The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) yesterday urged delegates to the ongoing National Conference to dwell on issues bordering on the nation’s security.
The National Chairman of the group, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
“With the deteriorating state of affairs in the country, particularly insecurity, there is the need for the conference to suggest measures that could assist the Federal Government in tackling insurgency.
“The most immediate measure toward tackling insurgency in the country is to ensure that there is dialogue between the Federal Government and the various insurgents particularly those that have almost taken over in the North.
“As the dialogue develops, the government should also take care of the root cause of the insurgency,” he said.
He said that the greatest root cause of the insurgency was the high level of poverty, hunger and unemployment.
Musa noted that the priority of the government was to do something concrete and immediate about the level of poverty, hunger and unemployment to check the “negative state of the nation.”
He also called on the government to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in 2015 which should lead to a legitimate government.
“These are the country’s immediate goals that should be realised within the next nine months.
“They are certainly achievable within this time frame because government has a lot of financial resources that can be managed to bring about high level of employment in the country, provided that the government is capable,” he said.
The chairman also decried the leading role of the private sector in the economy as opposed to the leading role of the public sector. (NAN)
