The President of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria(COREN) Engr. Ali Rabiu said multiplicity of Engineering codes and standards are not good for national development.
Rabiu made this known recently at the 28th engineering assembly in Abuja.
“There has been concerns about Nigeria Engineering Codes and Standards in the engineering practice arena.
“Several efforts and commitments have been thrown at the Nigeria engineering codes and standards, except from drafts and paper records available in COREN shelves and library “.
He said nothing tangible can be said to have been achieved.
“ The council just recently approved and inaugurated a standing committee on engineering codes and standards.
“The functions of the committee is to prepare regulations on the development, maintenance and promotion of engineering codes and standards, to formulate guidelines and procedures or preparation, review, adoption of codes and standards for engineering practice fields and with a view to achieve global best practices in engineering among other function”.
The council’s president reiterated that,the information was very important to this assembly as it meant to request all practitioners to actively support the committee and ensure that at the next COREN assembly, a set of Nigeria engineering codes and standards will be launched.
“Since the codes and standards are the technical guidelines for promoting safety, reliability, productivity and efficiency in engineering work, COREN shall continue to encourage the relevant and competent institutions, organizations, association to make the development of codes and standards the foundation of their professional work”.
Meanwhile, he said that, the committee has started work with the NSE institution and CODET for possible review of records and documents found in registry.
“They are seriously working with NATE,NISET,NAEC and SON to ensure that all relevant codes of practice or product standards presently in applications and use captured established procedures and protocols.
“This renewed effort is to ensure that development of engineering codes and standards continues in a sustainable manner,”Engr.Rabiu stated.
