The Senate on Wednesday mourned the deaths of travelers burnt to ashes on Monday by suspected bandits on their way to Gayan in Kaduna state from Sokoto State.
This is even as the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has disclosed that the chamber would next Tuesday amend the 2015 Senate Standing Orders.
The travelers numbering twenty-three, according to reports, were attacked in Angwan Bawa, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The victims were said to be on their way to the southern part of the country when they were intercepted and killed by the bandits.
Coming under order 43 of the Senate rules, Senator Ibrahim Gobir (Sokoto East), drew the attention of his colleagues to the gruesome murder of the travelers.
He lamented the spate of killings, which, he warned, were alarming and on the increase.
He called on the military and security agencies to immediately intervene by deploying personnel to secure the lives of residents in states affected by the activities of bandits.
The Senate, thereafter, observed a minute silence to mourn the victims of Monday’s attack by bandits.
In another development on the amendment of the 2015 Senate Standing Orders Tuesday next week, Lawan said the decision to amend the Senate Rules was to ensure an improvement to enable the chamber to run itself better.
The Senate President explained that the amendment exercise would allow the Senate to accommodate Committees created under the Eighth Assembly and not captured in the standing orders.
He said, “The copies of the proposal will be distributed today (Wednesday), and the idea of for all of us to study between now and Monday, and on Tuesday we will look into the amendments proposed.
“So, if any of us have any idea of an additional thing or suggestion on what has been introduced, by Tuesday we should be able to have our position.
“It is inevitable that the standing orders as they are today have to be amended for us to be up-to-date with everything that we do here.”
