Kebbi procures N500m drugs for pregnant women

Kebbi state government has spent N500 million on drugs to be distributed to pregnant women and infants in the state.

The Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Sambawa made the disclosure during a sensitisation workshop on maternal mortality and enhanced child health care services, organized by a non-governmental organization, Advocacy Nigeria, at the weekend, in Birnin Kebbi.

“The state government, in its effort to reduce maternal mortality and enhance child health-care services, has spent N500 Million on drugs to be distributed to pregnant women and infants in the state,” he said.

The commissioner, who was represented by Director, Pharmacy, Alhaji Hassan Maigandi said the drugs have already been procured and would be distributed before the end of this month.

He added that the state had SURE-P nurses distributed in all nooks and crannies of the state, to boost health care delivery in the in the rural areas.

Speaking earlier, the North -West coordinator of the project, Hajiya Safiya Abdullahi, said the project is in partnership with the SURE-P, and is aimed at discussing various issues on maternal mortality and child-health services.

She said the Advocacy Nigeria would liaise with the Executive arm, the Legislature, traditional institutions, non-governmental organisations, to ensure that the spirit of the project is achieved.

A former commissioner of women affairs, Hajiya Amamata Kwaido, in her good will message lamented the poor personnel at the health-care centers in the state, adding that most of the new clinics and health care centers lack facilities and doctors.

She advocated for a change from husbands to allow their women to be attending ante-natal clinics during pregnancy.
