Former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulazeez Yari, has defied the zoning arrangements recently released by the party, as his supporters yesterday stormed the National Secretariat of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to purchase the chairmanship form which the party pegged at twenty million naira.
Note that while the party had zoned the party’s chairmanship to North Central, Yari is from Zamfara, which falls in the North Western region of the country, hence the zoning does not favour him to contest the position.
Leading the pack of Yari’s supporters to purchase the chairmanship form yesterday at the APC secretariat, Tijjani Kaura, said “This is a delegation from Zamfara state on behalf of the former governor of the state, Sen Abdulaziz Yari, in purchasing the national championship form.
“We have just purchased the form for Sen Abdulaziz Yari to contest for the position of the party’s national chairmanship.
Responding to questions on if the former Governor is aware that the position has been zoned to North Central, Kaura said “As far as we are concerned, there are contending issues concerning zoning.
“First of all, we are fully aware that the national championship has been zoned to the north and the presidency has been zoned to the South. As you are aware that all positions of the party that were hitherto in the south will go to the north. Zamfara, being in the North, is well qualified.”
He said they are very ready for the convention come 26th, adding that Yari, being one of the founding fathers of the party, who has contributed immensely and greatly to the betterment and welfare of this party, is ready to lead the party and will not allow it to die.
Pointing out that what the party needs now is a unifier, Kaura said “This was a party which was formed by the coming together of many parties. If care is not taken, the party will be so divided, but Yari as a founding father, will ensure that the party does not disintegrate”.
