A Nursery 2 pupil of Olumawu Basic Education School, Oluwatishe Opadiran has emerged winner of the Olumawu’s 4th Annual Reading Fair Competition in the concluding part of the competition in Abuja.
Several Olanayan of Holborn Academy came second, while Ojochenchi Danjuma of Tender years Abuja came third. Also,Lower primary category,Dili Ifeadu from aduvie international school .first position,Ameh hanlal from Taber to school.postion.second ,Leona ozoeze from olumawu school .position.Third position.
Fatima Oyibamiji of Premier international school took the first position, Ojolionu Cecilia came second while Rayyan Salim came third in the secondary school category.
In the J.S.S Category,Chimaka Abimbola Aduvie International School took first position,Valerie Chizaam Offia .Light way Academy.2nd Place while Esther Ali Roberto School came third .
In the upper primary School category, Chitraksh Bajaj of Pageant School took the first position, Abidoye Seyifunmi of Olumawu School, came second and Usman Khadija of sunrise International school came third.
Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the events, the principal of Olumawu Basic Education School, Rotimi Jibuku, said the goal of this competition was to raise a generation of readers and knowledgeable citizens in Nigeria whose knowledge would impact positively the society.
“ We discovered that instead of just making it an internal program, we should have an avenue where other schools can also take part in that is why we have the addition where other schools in the neighboring cities can also come and take part in the program as well”.
Speaking about the reading fair competition, he said, “we have actually have programs like this, and we also have an instance where other schools have come to ask us on how can they do something like this? and we were able to give them tips about what they can do to also have this kind of program.
While encouraging parents to read, he said,” Children will do something if they also see their parents also doing because is just telling them to read, so having that good example and doing it taking action is going to help you as well. So, parents, I encourage you to read.
“Well, I think what we are doing now is something that like I said, If you have most of these public schools having a program like this in their various schools as well, it is going to encourage children as well to imbibe reading culture in them is not all about Private schools,” he said.
On her part, Ruth Melaye who’s in Year-8 Olumawu School said this competition is very helpful and beneficial to the people and family, adding it would help students discover new things and also learn new things every day.
Also, speaking, the school laberian, James Udele,said the rule of reading cannot be overemphasized because that is the only parts you can enrich students just like the words of an American scholar, Charles E. Jones, who once said, you are today and you continue to be in the next five years.
According to him, “The books you read the people you meet, so that’s the only way you can enrich yourself with knowledge. When you read books,it gives you these two things, either you meet people, or the books you read will go a long way in taking you to any intellectual heights”,he said
Speaking about the competition, James explained that The Olumawu School R.E.A.D (Reading for Empathy, Achievement, and Discovery) programme began in 2017 by Dr. Felicia Jackson (former principal) with the goal to cultivate the love for reading in all students at Olumawu School.
