The Chairman of the National Populations Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa Kwarra has
said that the country’s revised National Population Policy is targeted at zero maternal deaths by 2030.
The chairmen stated this on Tuesday in Abuja, during a media workshop on the revised National Policy on Population for Sustainable Development.
At the programme organised by the commission in collaboration with the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN), Kwarra said the policy was meant to address the challenges posed by the country’s population.
He said it will also ensure the reduction of some negative practices against women and girls by the end of 2030.
Speaking further, the chairman said the policy was to shift the demography to a productive age to increase manpower and bolster economic activities in the country.
On his part, the Coordinator, African Health Budget Network (AHBN), Dr Aminu Magashi Garba, noted that President Muhammadu Buhari signed the revised National Population Policy in February this year.
He said the workshop was aimed at sensitizing the media on the contents of the policy.
He urged the media to focus on the key issues and target areas which are to reduce the country’s maternal mortality ratio from 512 per 100, 000 live births to 72 per 100,000 live births.
He said stories and features should reveal areas of focus and arrest policy makers and relevant stakeholders.
