Airports closure looms as FG stance on merger provokes warning strike

Date:

From Suleiman Idris, Lagos

The federal government stance on merging three agencies in the ministry of aviation appears to have drawn the fury of unions in the sector who have perfected plans to embark on a two days national warning strike to drive home their opposition.

The decision to merge the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, and the Nigerian Metrological Agency NIMET into a single body is a the fallout of the

Steve Oransanya led committee which recommended the collapsing of certain agencies and parastatals of government.

Peoples Daily investigation found that the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria ATSSSAN, National Union of Air Transport Employees NUATE and National Association of Aircraft Pilot and Engineers NAAPE have put their members on red alert in preparation for the two days warning strike aimed at paralyzing the country’s aviation sector.

From all indications, the unions have set in motion the process of endorsing the national strike, first of its kind in the country as they have vowed to close down airports across the country.

It was gathered that letters have been dispatched to the National Assembly, Presidency and the National Security Adviser over the planned strike and itemizing reasons why government must not go ahead with its plan.

ATSSSAN is also said to have concluded plans to get the endorsement of the strike from all its organs as its National Administrative Council Meeting and National Executive Council meeting scheduled for May.
