Twitter says existing verified account holders will lose their blue checkmarks “in a few months” unless they pay $8 monthly.

Elon Musk, Twitter’s chief executive officer, made this known in a tweet on Wednesday.

“All unpaid legacy Blue checkmarks will be removed in a few months,” Musk said while responding to a user who asked him questions about the status of legacy blue checkmarks.

At the same time, Musk said Twitter would relaunch the blue checkmark subscription service on November 29th.

The ‘Twitter Blue’ subscription, which allowed any user to receive the verification checkmark for a monthly fee of $8, was suspended last week after several glitches.

The blue checkmark was previously reserved for active, notable, and authentic accounts of public interest.

Accounts that receive the blue checkmark as part of a Twitter Blue subscription will not undergo review to confirm that they meet the active, notable and authentic criteria used in the previous process.

“Punting relaunch of Blue Verified to November 29th to make sure that it is rock solid,” Musk said in another tweet.

Musk added that verified users would be unable to change their display names without losing their checkmark “until Twitter confirms name to meet terms of service”.
