•Says it’s President last for Nigerian youths

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Peace Corps, Dickson Akor has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sign into the law the bill establishing the peace Corps which has been passed into law by both chambers of the National Assembly.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday read for the third time and pass, the bill seeking to establish to facilitate Peace, Volunteerism, Community Services, Neighbourhood Watch and Nation Building.

The bill which was sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume was passed about four months ago by the Senate and sent to the House for concurrence and will now be transmitted to the President for assent.

Reacting to the passage of the bill by the House, Akor told newsmen that the best legacy the President can leave for Nigerian youths was to sign the bill into law as the Corps provides an employment opportunity for Nigerian youths.

He said even though the President has done so much for Nigerian youths, he can still do more by taking steps that will remove majority of them from the streets and away from criminal acts.

He said with over 187,000 members across the country, the Peace is poise to contribute to the security of the nation, adding that the gray areas that led to the bill not being signed in 2016 when it was first passed has been addressed.

He said provisions that that tends to bring the Peace Corps in conflict with other security agencies have been removed from the bill.

He however said that one of the major reasons why the bill was not signed in 2016 was because of the recession which the country was facing.
