Gombe IPAC kicks against appointment of local government chairmen as caretakers

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Gombe state has denied the appointment of the local government chairmen as

caretakers.

 

It’s Publicity secretary Abubakar Aliyu stated this while briefing Journalists in Gombe on Thursday.

 

He said the appointment of the 11 local government chairmen by the government as caretakers, as far as IPAC is concerned, it will not support their functions.

 

While addressing the media, the publicity secretary said it is on record that it was on the 19 of December 2022 when the ministry for local government and chieftaincy affairs issued an expiration of the tenure of all the 11 local government council chairmen to hand over note to the elected one.

According to him, government decided to appeal to Gombe state House of Assembly to approve the appointment of the past local government chairmen as caretakers inorder to supervise the councils.

 

He said the appointment of the past local government chairmen as caretakers by the government is against the existing norms and procedures.

 

Speaking further, he said local government area councils is the third tier of government in Nigeria according to Section 7 sub 1 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended. In this regard, there should be no delay regarding the election of new local government chairmen once the tenure elapsed.

They called on government not to hesitate in conducting local government elections as amended in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
