The Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, has established a monitoring action group that would do a census of all moribund and poor capacity industries, including agro-based firms, with the view to rehabilitate them.
The society plans to come up with a feasibility report to guide practical intervention to revive local industries while partnering with government.
President of the Society, Engr. Ademola Olorunfemi disclosed this while briefing newsmen on National and Engineering issues in Abuja.
He urged the Nigerian government to create an enabling environment for indigenous Engineering practice to thrive.
Engr. Olorunfemi stressed the need to establish a National Council for Science, Engineering and Technology to transform the nation’s economy through scientific innovations.
“Every country that has become great in the last three centuries has had to master science, engineering, technology and innovation… It has led to physical and economic development of such nations…South Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore, etc are such examples,” he said.
He also recommended ways to translate Nigeria’s new GDP to impact on the lives of people.
Mr. Olorunfemi stated that government must invest in Agriculture, enforce and promote made-in-Nigeria goods and services by patronising indigenous engineers and other professionals while showing commitment to research and development.
Meanwhile, the NSE recommended the privatisation of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to allow for diverse technical expertise.
The society also recommended ‘a new route system to be built for double rail to include the East-West track route.’
The NSE also recommended the need to revamp and promote fabrication and manufacture of equipment by indigenous firms as well as a speedy amendment of the railway Act through the proposed railway bill.
Engr. Olorunfemi attributed the standard of building materials, design flaws, environmental conditions among other factors to the cause of building collapse.
