Former Ekiti state Governor and embattled member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ayodele Fayose has admitted that he deliberately worked against his party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the last February polls.
Fayose while speaking as guest of Channels Television programme Politics Today on Sunday evening said he had no regrets in working against the emergence of Atiku because he believed that power was supposed to shift to the South.
He said he was not a pretender and could not have supported Atiku just because he was a PDP member.
According to Fayose, the issues were between party loyalty and national interest, and that he chose to stand with the interest of the nation by supporting power shift and working against his party.
“It was the turn of the South to produce President in 2023,” he said in part, and added that he was a PDP member but he and his son were suspended and never treated fairly.
He said he had to join hands to work for the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who later won the election because he was a Southerner.
Asked whether it was morally right to work against the interest of his party in a crucial election, Fayose said he was convinced by the line of action he took.
He was also asked to comment on perceptions that his hurried support and campaigns for Tinubu was to appeal for a stay of action on allegations of corruption to the tune of N6. 9 a billion by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
However, the signals went poor and he could not give a clear response to that question.
