The Chief of Naval Staff, (CNS) Vice-Admiral Usman Jibrin has said the Navy has arrested 38 ships so far, for their involvement in various illegalities in the maritime domain, including eight Chinese ships for illegal fishing in the Nigerian waters within the first five months of this year.
The CNS, represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear-Admiral Ameen Ikioda stated this yesterday, in Abuja while addressing journalist on the line up of activities to mark the 58th anniversary celebration of the Navy with the theme “ Combating crude oil theft in Nigeria’s maritime domain: an imperative for improved national revenue earnings”.
The Naval Chief said the Nigerian Navy has been unrelenting in its operations to project the maritime environment against all forms of threats to the country’s interest.
He also said, to this regard, the Nigerian Navy has constantly carried out surveillance and patrol of the maritime area with available surveillance systems, ships, and helicopters as such policing operations are aimed at checking crude oil theft , illegal bunkering , piracy sea robbery , illegal fishing among others.
Activities lined up for the weeklong event, which will be carried out in five commands, include special Juma’at prayers and inter-denominational church services, medical rhapsody and communities relations in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Calabar among other activities.
