Community rejects substandard school projects in Nasarawa

Tudun Amba community in Nasarawa has rejected three classrooms and office projects executed by the state government over poor quality of work by the contractor.

Mr. Dauda Ali, the spokesperson of the community, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing directors of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

The officials were on an inspection tour of Angwan Galadima Primary School, Tudun Amba in Lafia, the state capital.

He said the community took the position after several letters and complaints to the board on the substandard work done by the contractor in the school.

“Gov.Tanko Al-Makura is determined and committed to improve on the standard of education in the state.

“He is doing this through the award of contracts for the construction and renovation of primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

“As a community, we will not fold our hands to watch some people sabotage the governor’s efforts.

“The community has written several letters and complaints to the board on the use of sub standard materials by the contractor.

“The board promised us that it will stop the contractor from further execution of the project.

“To our surprise, the contractor went ahead and did a poor quality work; you saw it yourself, all the ceilings in all the classrooms are leaking.

“The paintings are washing off, among others; how can we accept such poor projects to our detrimental” ?

Ali, however, said the community would continue to support the state government and urged it to blacklist the contractor to deter others.

Responding, Mr. Michael Otukpo, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics of the board, appealed for patient and promised to sanction and blacklist the contractor.

“We received the complaint letter; the board stopped the contractor from the beginning.

“We directed the contractor to abide by the contract guidelines, we do not know why he went ahead with the poor quality work,”
